Frequently asked questions

We are proud to say that 2023 will be our 14th year in business; we have been Montana owned and operated since 2009 with our first store opening in Helena. We now have 4 stores across the state with plans to expand!

Some of our “legacy” strains have been with us since 2009, but others come from a variety of reputable seed sources, one of our favorites being Exotic Genetics.

Per Montana law, we are licensed to sell a recreational or medicinal consumer no more than 28 grams of flower, 800mg of infused products (edibles, topicals, tinctures), or 8 grams of concentrates, or a combination therein that does not exceed 28 grams DAILY. Medicinal patients are licensed to purchase up to 5 or 8 ounces a month, accordingly. Recreational consumers can purchase the daily limit of 28 grams without a monthly limit.

We prefer to grow in coco for a multitude of reasons, including but not limited to having a higher defense against pests and pathogens, a natural resistance to fungi and bacteria, and coco coir soil is excellent for water and nutrient retention which contributes to optimal root and plant growth!

Our harvests of cannabis are grown in small batches to maintain the high standard of quality in our flower that we expect. This allows for more care to be put into each plant. As cannabis grow cycles are from 9 to 12 weeks long depending on strain, and we only have so much growing space for our multitude of strains, we rotate the strains growing. Don’t worry, Paradise Sunset will be back soon! Leave us your number, and we’ll call when it comes in!

Being in the cannabis industry is different from other industries as you have to apply for and get a badge by the Department of Revenue before you can start to work. Once you get your fingerprints and background check done, classes for Human Trafficking and Legal Cannabis Sales in Montana completed, and submit your picture, a picture of your ID, and an application for your badge to the state, you receive a temporary badge that allows you to begin work. The DOR will then mail you a permanent badge, once approved, that expires one year from issuance.

Go to Cannabis Control Division – Montana Department of Revenue (mtrevenue.gov), scroll down to the bottom, and select “Worker Permits”. This will give you all the information you need to get started!

Yes. Per Montana state law, every product that leaves a cannabis dispensary has to be in a state-approved, child-proof, warning-compliant exit bag. We recommend you keep the first one we give you and reuse that one as many times as possible. Every cannabis business is aware of how much plastic is being sent out into the world, so we do all we can here at Montana Kush to lower our carbon footprint by having exit bags that are made from recycled materials and are BPI compostable!

You’re right, Montana doesn’t have sales tax on purchases. However, the taxes on cannabis aren’t considered a sales tax, it is a “Cannabis Tax” – 20% for Recreational consumers, and 4% for Medical cardholders. Each county can also implement an up to 3% Cannabis Tax. Money collected from this tax goes to fund the Healing and Ending Addiction through Recovery and Treatment (HEART) account. After the HEART distribution, the remainder goes to the Dept. of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the State Park account, the Trails and Recreational Facilities account, the Non-Game Wildlife account, the Veterans and Surviving Spouses State Special Revenue account, the Board of Crime Control for Crisis Intervention Team training, and the Montana State General Fund.

As of April 2023, the Montana Department of Revenue estimates that Montana’s cannabis industry has produced over $62.6 Million in tax revenue since the beginning of Recreational sales on January 1, 2022.

Fortunately we have an ATM in every store location throughout the state to accommodate our customers and our CASH ONLY business. Unfortunately, due to Federal regulations, we are unable to accept other forms of payment. Thank you for understanding and coming prepared!
